Modern Barrhaven starts in the 1960s, on a 200-acre farm Mel Barr had bought meaning to build a horse racing track and put houses on instead. Barrhaven Public School opened in 1968-69. Old Barrhaven, the earliest core, lies between Cedarview Road and Greenbank Road; Longfields sits east of Greenbank and west of Woodroffe; Davidson Heights is east of Woodroffe by the river; Chapman Mills runs south and east of Prince of Wales with Stoneway Drive at its north edge; Stonebridge lies between Jockvale Road and Prince of Wales beside the golf course. Half Moon Bay and Quinn's Pointe are still being built along Cambrian Road, and CN tracks cut the whole community diagonally.
What that means for a clear-out is that Barrhaven loads are first-generation. There is no century of accumulation in these basements, because the basements are not a century old. It is the original owner's furniture, the builder-grade finishes coming out in the first real renovation, the playset the next family did not want.
Access follows the same pattern. Standard suburban lots, no back lanes, so the driveway does the work and the load comes out through the front. The built-up suburb is on full municipal water and sanitary sewer, so unlike Greely or Richmond there is no well or septic question to settle before we book. One address is the exception, and it is next.

Cedarhill Estate sits northwest of the suburb proper, bordered by Fallowfield Road to the south, Cedarview Road to the east and Highway 416 to the north and west, wrapped around the golf course. Established in 1979, it is roughly 100 custom homes on one-acre lots, zoned country estate.
It has city water and city streets. It does not have sanitary sewers: every property runs its own septic system. It also has no sidewalks and no bus service. That changes two things for a truck. Where it parks matters, because a septic bed is not a driving surface, and the load is staged on the lot rather than to a curb line that does not exist. Say the address is in Cedarhill when you call and we plan for it instead of discovering it in the driveway.
Two tornadoes crossed here in one afternoon.
On 13 July 2023, one minute apart, two tornadoes tracked through Barrhaven. The Northern Tornadoes Project surveyed the ground by drone the following day, found two separate damage swaths and rated both EF1, with maximum winds estimated at 155 km/h. The first ran about 1.13 km with a path up to 150 m wide; the second about 4.92 km, up to 200 m wide. Ottawa Fire Services put it at at least 125 damaged homes, with one minor injury reported.
The survey team recorded one detail that says everything about clearing up after a storm in a suburb this new: where a tornado takes a roof off a new subdivision, blown-in insulation ends up stuck to nearly everything. Shingles, roof sheeting, fence panels, broken deck boards, branches and loose insulation are not curbside garbage in any useful quantity, and the three-item limit below is exactly why. Three items, every two weeks.
Ottawa collects three garbage items per household every two weeks. A bag is one item, a bin up to 140 litres and under 15 kg with a removable lid is one, and a bulky item such as a single piece of furniture is one. Anything above three has to go out in a City branded yellow bag, and furniture and large bulky items cannot be bagged at all. Over-limit waste without a yellow bag is left where it stands with a courtesy tag on it.
Run that arithmetic on a Barrhaven basement. One bedroom set is the whole allowance for a fortnight. A finished lower level, or a garage that has been absorbing a family's overflow since the house was new, takes months at three items a cycle. Private garbage removal exists for exactly that gap: one visit instead of a year of collection days, and no counting.
One mattress, or the whole first renovation.
A Barrhaven pickup can be a single item, and for one of them the curb is the better answer. The City lists mattresses among the bulky items it collects at no charge, and a mattress counts as one of your three garbage items for the fortnight. If that is the whole job, put it out on collection day. The mattress disposal guide covers the catch: a mattress and a box spring are two of the three, and neither can go in a yellow bag.
The larger Barrhaven job is the first renovation. Much of this suburb went up after 1990, and a lot of those houses have reached the age where the original kitchen, the carpet and the first bathroom come out in the same month. None of it goes to the curb, at any count. The City states that drywall, plaster, wood including pressure-treated lumber, concrete and asphalt from building, renovating or demolishing are not collected with regular garbage.
At the Trail Road scale, sorting matters more than distance. A load that mixes garbage with recyclable material is charged in the City's most expensive category, so we keep the streams apart as we carry, with clean concrete in its own pile and metal pulled out of everything. On a Longfields basement, or a Half Moon Bay garage that has been filling since the house was new, that is the only version that finishes. It is also the only one that moves storm debris: shingles and fence panels are not a curbside item at any count.
