A bin rental is a disposal container dropped at your property, filled on your own schedule, and hauled away when you say it is full. It is the cheaper route when the work runs over several days and you are supplying the labour: a renovation, a roof, a deck tear-out, a garage worked through a weekend at a time. When the pile already exists and you want it gone in one visit, full-service junk removal usually costs less. We do both across Ottawa and Gatineau.

Sizing it, and why weight decides it
Bin volume is quoted in cubic yards, but weight is the limit most jobs reach first. Bins carry a weight allowance with a charge per tonne above it, so shingles, plaster, tile, wet carpet, soil and concrete hit the ceiling while the bin still looks half empty. Furniture and cardboard do the opposite.
Clean fill goes in its own bin
Concrete, asphalt, brick, soil and sod need a separate container because the scale prices them separately. The City of Ottawa's 2026 Trail Waste Facility rate table charges $144 per tonne for fill, meaning asphalt, masonry and concrete without rebar, and notes it must be free of waste including metal. Clean soil, sand and sod are $81.90 per tonne on the same terms. One bag of household garbage and the load stops being fill.
The things no bin can take
Asbestos, liquid waste and hazardous waste do not go in a bin, because the landfill will not receive them. The City's Rates for the Trail Waste Facility Landfill page lists all three as not accepted, along with commercial garbage, and requires oil tanks and drums to be cut in half or perforated first.

Describe the job, not the bin

Settle the placement before the truck is booked
On your own driveway there is nothing to arrange. In the roadway or a public laneway you need a City permit, and the City asks for a minimum of ten business days to process one. We raise it at booking, not on delivery day.
Drop-off, then it is yours
A bin rolls off the back of a truck, so the driver needs a straight run in and clearance above. Mention low branches, hydro lines or a tight gate at booking, and protection goes under the contact points before it lands. Load heavy material low and flat and keep everything below the top rail, because a bin loaded above the rail cannot be safely covered or carried.
Call when it is full
We collect it and handle the disposal. Pull scrap metal and electronics out first if you can. The City takes both at Trail Waste Facility free of charge when they are source separated, plus up to ten passenger or light truck tires per person per day.
A bin on an Ottawa street needs a permit, and the permit needs ten business days.
On a private driveway there is nothing to apply for. In the roadway or a public laneway the City of Ottawa names it directly: a roll off or disposal bin in a roadway or public laneway is on its list of works requiring a Temporary Construction Related Encroachment permit, issued under Road Activity By-law 2003-445. The 2026 fees are $101 for a simple permit, covering ten working days or less, and $998 for a complex one, meaning anything longer or any renewal. Both are non-refundable. On top of the fee comes a daily rental for the space: $2.02 per square metre per day on a sidewalk or roadway, $0.87 on a boulevard, minimum $41 a day. Processing takes a minimum of ten business days, and temporarily removing a parking space needs a further four business days of notice. The permit holder is responsible for traffic control and for keeping snow off the space. That is why almost every residential bin in this city sits on a driveway. The grass strip between sidewalk and road is usually City property too, and the Right of Way permit office, at row_permit_office@ottawa.ca or through 311, will tell you where your line is.
What drives the price.
A bin is priced on four things: size, how many days you keep it, what the load weighs, and what the load is made of. The last one moves the number most, because disposal is charged by weight and the rate depends on the material. The City of Ottawa's 2026 Trail Waste Facility rates make that checkable: $172.70 per tonne for residential garbage, with a flat $43.20 minimum under 250 kg, against $345.40 per tonne for garbage mixed with recyclable materials. Answer the weight question before the volume one. If the load is shingles, plaster, tile, soil or concrete you will reach the weight allowance while the bin still looks half full, and the right move is a smaller bin of the correct type rather than a larger one. If it is furniture and household clutter, volume runs out first.
Sometimes, and we will say so rather than sell you the bigger job. A bin wins when the work runs over several days, you are making the waste as you go, and you have people to load it: renovations, roofs, landscaping, a garage over a weekend. Full-service wins when the pile already exists, when stairs or heavy single items are involved, and when there is nowhere to put a bin.
Asbestos, liquid waste and household hazardous waste. The City's Trail Waste Facility rates page lists all three as not accepted, so no bin going there can take them. Hazardous means corrosive, flammable or poisonous: paint, solvents, gasoline, pool chemicals, propane cylinders and batteries. It can if nothing is done about it, which is why protection goes under the contact points before the bin is set down. The two real risks here are asphalt in July, which softens enough to take an impression from a loaded bin, and interlock or stamped concrete, which does not forgive a point load. One thing changes at the river: Ottawa's Road Activity By-law governs City of Ottawa roads only, so a bin on a Gatineau street is a Ville de Gatineau question rather than a City of Ottawa one. On a private driveway on either side there is nothing to apply for.

The fees are reset annually, so check the current figure before budgeting one, and note that neither page applies on the Gatineau side of the river.
