Gatineau is a different city in a different province, and its rules are not Ottawa's. There is no three-item curbside limit here. Bulky collection runs on registration: you book the pickup through the city, and a regular household gets a maximum of four articles per registration. We work the Quebec side, in all five sectors, for the loads that booking will not carry.
The refusal list is what catches people mid-renovation. Construction and renovation residue is out, and that is spelled out on the city's page as toilets, sinks, showers, gypsum and ceramic. Flat glass is out, so windows, mirrors and patio doors go nowhere. Refrigerated appliances are routed to GoRecycle instead. Anything over 50 kg or longer than 1.5 metres is refused outright.
A sofa bed fails that test. So does a gutted basement, a garage nobody has emptied since the merger, and most of what a flood leaves behind. That gap is the reason to call a crew here. It is not a reason to skip the city's own service, which is free and which we would rather you used when it fits.

Gatineau's bulky collection is registration-only. You book it in the DTRITUS app or on the city website, and the allowance is four articles per registration for a regular household and twelve for a multi-unit building. Everything below is refused whatever you do.
Over 50 kg or 1.5 m
Refused on weight or length, and the working test is whether two people can carry it without mechanical equipment. A sofa bed falls out of the system there.
Construction and renovation residue
Toilets, sinks, showers, gypsum and ceramic are named on the refusal list. A bathroom strip-out is outside bulky collection from the first hour.
Flat glass
Windows, mirrors, patio doors and loose panes. The surprising one, because it is neither heavy nor bulky.
Fridges and assembled wood
Refrigerated appliances go through GoRecycle instead. Wood thicker than 10 cm across is refused, and so is anything built from wood: stairs, walls, fences, patios.
None of that is a criticism of the system. It is a description of where the system stops, and where it stops is where a renovation, an estate clearance or a flooded lower level begins. The city's own page is the authority and it is linked at the foot of this one, with the date we read it.
The ecocentres are worth the Saturday.
If the load is small, take it yourself. Gatineau residents get ecocentre access on proof of residence and ID, with 6 cubic metres of bulky waste free per year. Since 2026-06-29 the free allowance also covers 12 cubic metres of branches and 12 cubic metres of construction residue a year, and the city charges by volume past those limits.
The permanent sites are the Aeroparc ecocentre at 26 rue Pierre-Menard and the boulevard de la Carriere ecocentre at 860 boulevard de la Carriere, which shares its address with the waste transfer centre. Opening times differ by site and by day, so check before you load a truck and drive across the city.
We put that on a page that is trying to sell you a pickup because it is true, and because the cases where it does not apply are obvious enough to name: the load is past the allowance, the material is too heavy to lift twice, there is no truck, or the house closes on Friday. Five sectors, five different jobs.
The City of Gatineau was created on 2002-01-01 out of five municipalities: Aylmer, Buckingham, Gatineau, Hull and Masson-Angers. People still say which sector they live in rather than the city, and de-amalgamation referendums were later defeated in each of the four former municipalities that held one.
It matters here for a duller reason: the city covers 341.84 square kilometres. Pointe-Gatineau sits roughly 6 km due north of Parliament Hill, while Masson-Angers is at the far eastern end of the same municipality. Population sits mostly in the middle. The Gatineau sector holds 45.4 per cent of residents, Hull 29.2, Aylmer 15.9, Buckingham 5.1 and Masson-Angers 4.3.
We do not have verified construction-era figures by sector, so this page does not quote any. What is safe to say is that the sectors do not look alike, and access is what changes with them. Vieux-Hull is a dense post-1900 core with limited frontage and on-street parking, which decides where a truck can sit. Old Aylmer's rue Principale is a heritage strip. Le Plateau is modern subdivision build-out with driveways.
In the Gatineau sector itself, Pointe-Gatineau, Baie McLaurin, Sainte-Rose and Touraine are the neighbourhood names in regular use. Give us one of those and we know what the driveway is likely to be before we arrive.
Three major floods in seven years.
Gatineau flooded in 2017, 2019 and 2023. The 2019 spring flood is the one with measured numbers behind it. Using satellite data, Statistics Canada counted 3,800 homes and cottages affected in Gatineau between 2019-04-20 and 2019-04-30, along with 62 km of roads and 39 square kilometres of flooded land surface. Those figures were reported by CBC and the article is linked below.
A flooded lower level produces a particular load, and it is heavier than people expect. Soaked broadloom and underpad, particleboard furniture that will never dry straight, drywall cut above the water line, wet insulation, and the stored boxes at the back that nobody had opened in years. It comes out in one visit when the access allows it, which on a Gatineau riverside street usually means reversing down a narrow drive rather than parking on the road.
The other date in local memory is 2018-09-21, when six tornadoes touched down across eastern Ontario and western Quebec. On the Quebec side, the two streets CBC returned to a year later were both in Mont-Bleu, in the Hull sector, and rebuilding was still under way when they got there.

Furniture, mattresses, appliances, a garage, a basement, a shed. Sorting for donation and recycling happens while we load, not afterwards.
The riverside streets carry the history. What follows a flood is a strip-out and a very heavy load, in the same visit.
An estate clearance is four articles the city will collect and a house full of everything else. The everything else is the job.
Sheds, decks, fences and interior strip-outs. Assembled wood structures are on the city's refused list by name, so they leave by truck or they do not leave.
Language. This site is in English and so is this page. Gatineau is not: at the 2021 Census 71.1 per cent of residents gave French as a mother tongue and 63.5 per cent are fluent in both official languages. If you would rather handle the job in French, say so at the start of the call rather than at the door. We are not going to print a claim about that on a web page before confirming it to you on the phone.
Tax and the invoice. Work performed in Quebec falls under Quebec sales tax rather than Ontario HST, so a Gatineau invoice does not read like an Ottawa one. Ask about it when you get your figure, not after.
